Nearly 800 skiers competed this year. I can’t imagine the level of organization required to run something like that. Our local representation made a pretty good showing, Steve Cole came in 22nd in Men 3. Crystal DeBey had some trouble, which is too bad because she is capable of winning her division when she is skiing well. Couple of other skiers from NY, Terry Fogerty and John Wilkins (remember those Lake Placid and Saranac Tournaments?) did well this year as well. Congratulations to everyone who competed and WELCOME ALL TO 2010!!!
Local Showing at Nationals
The Eastern region is not really known for being a “powerhouse” at the Nationals every year, simply by the fact that the average ski season for the region is about 6 weeks long. Which is why its FANTASTIC that we have a showing from the Rochester area. Matt Cole (B3), Nikki Dobbertin (G2) and Jessie Dobbertin (G3) have all skied already at the tournament and did well. Also, Hank Evatt from Sabael, NY (Adirondacks) skied in B3 with Matt. Just the fact that they are there is an accomplishment. Congratulations!! More to come when the older skiers hit the water over the next couple of days!!
KC Wilson edges out Tyler Yager at Nationals
KC Wilson takes 1st at the nationals with 4.5 buoys at 38 off. The score was enough to edge out Tyler Yager into second place, who was holding the lead until then with a 3 at 38 pass. We have the post ski interview with Tyler.
Thanks for keeping us updated Marcus.
Edged in Water 2 (video review)
Last night I sat down to watch Edged in Water 2, a water ski film by Todd Ristorcelli from Water Ski magazine. Water ski videos, or any independent sports videos, usually come in three flavors. You either get an instructional video, a documentary or a inspirational music video. Edged in Water 2 mixes the inspirational music video with a documentary, covering a glimpse of water skiing from the eyes of Todd Ristorcelli.
The largest warning factor I have before watching this movie is that you are left with a level of water skiing envy beyond which is satisfied by visiting your local lake. Covering footage of what I consider exotic destinations for water skiing, I would like to rename the movie “I am Todd Ristorcelli and you are NOT, nah nah na boo boo”. Ok, that is a little harsh, only because I am jealous that I have not been to one of any of the destinations covered in the video. Actually the movie depicts how Todd recognizes how amazing his life of water skiing is and you can tell he truly just wants to share. That makes it hard to hate the man, but I still remain envious.
The inspiration part of the video works great. The music tracks are well orchestrated to the video, and if there was a boat around I was ready to jump in the water right then and there.
I am not sure if there is a 3rd rendition in the works or not. My first suggestion of course is to let me come along with you for a year and help carry the gear, take videos, etc. The second thing is that I would love to also see the transition to high definition. Watching the visuals on a 55 inch LCD screen were visually stunning, but there are a few scenes where I want to see it shot in high definition for sure.
The most enjoyment is that I loved seeing the other destinations to ski around the world, even though they are the exotic ones. Covering the venues that our friends across the globe wake up to every morning brings us all a little closer.
The best narration of course is when they are in Italy describing how waking up to see the reflection of the mountains in “the morning glass”. Thanks for the subconscious plug for the site Todd, and let me know when you need me to pack my gear for the next one.

Guesses??
At regionals this year skiers were given a little goody bag. Being my first time at this competition I don’t know if this is a common thing, or the a new idea. Either way, the bag was filled with …. well… stuff. Some of it was useful to a degree, I got a nice Kodak pen, and a plastic key chain that is a 7 degree gauge for a ski wing. A lot of advertisement. But mixed in with this wonderful booty was a heavy thing. I do not know what it is and I would be grateful for a little help.
What is this??

Waterski World Championships Final Results
In the end we, Will Asher (.5 ball at 41 off) and Whitney McClintock (2 at 39 off) take the slalom championship. Whitney also won the trick portion and cleaned up in the overall. I think one of the interesting things is the fact that Belarus is a powerhouse in tricks taking the top 3 positions. Canada won the team portion with USA and France 2 and 3 respectively.

World Championships – Womens prelim results
Of the 50 women from around the world skiing, only the top 12 go to the finals this weekend and the competition was FIERCE! When the dust had settled, Canada’s own Whitney McClintock had taken the pole position with a score of 2 bouys at 10.75m (39.5off). That was not the exciting part, after all of the scores were in there was a 7 way tie for 7th place! If you do the math, only 6 can move on to the finals. 7 girls had skied 3bouys at 11.25m (38off) and had to go back out for another set. Waterski World Championships
The World Championships got underway in Calgary, Canada yesterday. They will run through this Sunday. Check the website below for schedules, startlists and live results.
Thanks Steve!
Now that the 4+ days of the Eastern Regionals has drawn to a close with some amazing skiing recorded, we need to give a hand and a bow to the mastermind behind it all. Steve was at the tournament every day, first pull to last in most cases. He brought us streaming video and multiple updates every day. There are probably over 100 photos on this website related to the regionals. I spent a total of 4 hours at the tournament, but thanks to Steve, I feel like I was there all 4 days. There are Pro Tour stops with less coverage.
I know what Steve was/is trying to do; shed more light on the sport of waterskiing, especially locally. Make people aware of the skiing community, competitive and recreational, and making it more accessible. Accessibility starts with awareness and that is exactly what this website is designed to do and Steve is making it happen.
Final Day of Regionals 2009
Sunday marked the final day of the regionals here in Penfield NY. Up until Sunday the weather has been nothing short of perfect. Even the threatening storm on Saturday was nice enough to detour around Penfield. Unfortunately, our luck had run out, and we were delivered some more rain Sunday morning, after starting the Mens 4 competition. It turned into enough rain to warrant a 1 hour delay in the competition, as we waited out the wet conditions.
For those who made it out before and after the rain to
watch the action, it was worth the wait. Before the rain even started, we had a skier take a spill going through the entrance gates in the early rounds of Mens 2. It was heart wrenching to watch, knowing that people traveled from all down the east coast, only to end before getting a full run in.
There was quite a few battles going on in Mens 4 as the skies cleared and the sun came back out. Dean Rudy pulled out and held first place while we watched Steve Cole throw his body out to try and catch the 4th ball.
While the end of the slalom event on Sunday marked the end of the event for a lot of people, the jumping continued into the afternoon. Being a slalom skier myself and one of over-helpful tendencies, I of course became enthralled with the RV stuck in the mud and the efforts to take it out. I think it was the allure of heavy equipment coming to the rescue that really kept my entertainment.
